Chickens

The chicken is a domesticated fowl descended from red junglefowl which was first domesticated at least five thousand years ago in Asia. Chickens are omnivores feeding on both plants and insects, and sometimes even larger animals such as mice. They will normally live for 5 to 10 years depending on their breed. Both male (cockerel) and females (hen) have a fleshy crest on their head called a comb and flaps of skin under their beak called wattles. However, the cockerel can normally be distinguished from the hen by having a much larger wattle and comb as well as long flowing tail feathers. Chickens live in flocks and do have a ‘pecking order’ within the group with dominant individuals having priority over food and nesting locations. Often this does mean, if a new individual joins the group, there can be fighting as they find their place in the flock.
